This is a story of survival and courage. A story to change an idea, an image. A story to change a belief. I'm a photographer, an American, recently returned from South Africa. I spent over five years there, visiting orphanages for sub-Saharan children whose parents had died of AIDS.
While living in South Africa in 1997, Chellie Kew came face-to-face with the plight of millions of orphaned African children. She used the lens of her camera to recount their courageous and heartrending story in her book, African Journal: A Child's Continent—the inspiring narrative of how these children taught her the true meaning of love.

African Journal: A Child's Continent is a compelling and handsome book, an outstanding presentation.
Susan V. Berresford, President, The Ford Foundation
A voice for the unheard children of Africa , those orphaned by the AIDS virus. This compassionate and brilliant photographic essay shows us the tragedy of the AIDS virus and its aftermath. We see the reality of whole villages run by children, because the adults are dead, but we see also the valor of children, and the glory of the human spirit. Kew calls us to a deeper level of love and of responsibility to all of our human family. She asks us not to forget.

Your book is beautiful with wonderful pictures and a great message.

Ms. Kew's stories are poignant and spare, and her portraits reach through the eyes to touch the heart. African Journal profoundly illustrates a tragic and unseen world that is nonetheless filled with courage, hope and dignity.

What a fascinating, well written book. I was impressed by the quality reproduction of the pictures. They added so much to the book. The cover was eye catching and appropriate. The author writes well and this was a joy to review.

The print quality of this book is exceptional. The layout is top-notch. Throughout the pages of this book the author's passion for the subject comes to light. Kew uses words sparingly, but in this case less is more and the photographs prove that a picture is worth more than a thousand words.
